Our Review

A Korean-Nigerian movie? Honestly, who even conceived this idea? My Alien Lover is not just another romance film. It is a bold blend of Korean drama aesthetics and traditional Yoruba Nigerian storytelling, and somehow, against all odds, it works. Very mad combination. When the producer’s first attempt at a Nigerian-Korean collaboration, My Sunshine, was released, a lot of people mocked it. Many called it cringe, unrealistic, and impossible to pull off properly. People did not really take it seriously at first. But as time went on, the movie started gaining attention internationally, and suddenly, what many dismissed became something people could not stop talking about. Now this? This feels like growth. My Alien Lover takes the same daring concept and improves it beautifully. Since the movie clearly identifies itself as a fantasy comedy-drama, it gives itself the freedom to be exaggerated, dramatic, emotional, and even unrealistic at times, and honestly, that is part of the charm. Fantasy is supposed to stretch reality, and the film fully embraces that. One thing that deserves serious praise is the language blend. The mix of Yoruba, English, and Korean was handled surprisingly well without making the audience feel lost or confused. That balance was intelligent. The movie stays rooted in a Yoruba setting while allowing the Korean characters to speak both Korean and English naturally. Even the inclusion of a Nigerian-Korean interpreter character added to the experience in such a crazy but interesting way. It sounds chaotic on paper, but somehow, it flows. The setup was beautiful, the storyline was engaging, and the casting made sense. Everybody looked like they belonged in the world the movie was trying to create. The actors were beautiful, the costumes were fitting, and visually, the film carried that dreamy K-drama energy while still maintaining a strong Nigerian identity. And the humor? Good stuff. The movie does not take itself too seriously all the time, which helps the emotional and fantasy elements land better. There are funny moments, dramatic moments, romantic moments, and awkward moments all existing together in a way that keeps the film entertaining. Most importantly, you can see the effort. You can see the ambition. This is one of those projects where even if you notice imperfections here and there, you still appreciate the creativity and courage behind it. Nollywood rarely experiments on this level with cross-cultural storytelling, and for attempting something this different, the team deserves credit. In fact, 100% recommended. And the fact that a movie with this level of creativity and production quality is available on YouTube instead of being locked behind cinema access is even more reason people should watch it. My Alien Lover feels like one of those films people may initially underestimate, only to later realize how ambitious and refreshing it actually is. Kemi Ikuseedun and the entire team really created something interesting here.
