Nigerian Military Announces Trial of Officers Over Alleged Coup Plot Against President Tinubu

The Nigerian military has announced plans to put several serving officers on trial over allegations that they were involved in a plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The announcement was made on Monday morning, 26 January 2026, after an internal investigative panel concluded its findings and recommended prosecution.

According to military authorities, the officers were initially detained in October 2025 on suspicion of serious breaches of military discipline and regulations. Investigators later linked them to actions deemed a threat to national security and Nigeria’s constitutional order.

The suspects are expected to be tried before a military court, in line with established procedures governing offences within the armed forces. Officials stressed that the process would follow due legal and disciplinary standards.

The development comes at a time of heightened security challenges across the country, including ongoing counter-insurgency operations, growing public concern over governance, economic pressure and political stability.

Military leaders reiterated their commitment to professionalism and loyalty to civilian authority, warning that any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democratic system would be dealt with firmly.

The identities of the officers involved have not been made public, and no official date has yet been announced for the commencement of the trials.
