Lagos acquires new trains to boost Red Line capacity

Authorities in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, have announced the arrival of a new set of trains aimed at strengthening the city’s growing rail network.

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed that 24-car train sets have been received to support operations on the Lagos Red Line.

The development is expected to increase passenger capacity, reduce waiting times, and ease daily commuting for millions of residents in the densely populated city.

Lagos, home to more than 20 million people, has long struggled with traffic congestion, with many commuters spending hours on the road each day. Officials say expanding rail infrastructure is a key part of efforts to modernise the transport system and provide a more reliable alternative to road travel.

“The additional trains will improve efficiency and make commuting easier for Lagosians,” the governor said in a statement shared on social media.

The Red Line is one of several rail projects introduced by the state government to transform public transportation. It runs across key parts of the city, connecting residential and commercial areas.

Transport analysts say that while the expansion is a positive step, sustained investment, maintenance, and integration with other modes of transport will be essential to achieving long-term success.

For many residents, the hope is that improvements to the rail system will significantly reduce travel times and improve quality of life in one of Africa’s busiest cities.
