Nigeria’s House of Representatives releases certified copies of newly signed tax reform laws amid public scrutiny
The Speaker of the House, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, in concurrence with the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Saturday directed the immediate release of the Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the laws, including the endorsement and assent pages signed by the President, to enable public reference and verification.
The move is aimed at improving transparency and restoring public confidence after multiple unofficial versions of the tax acts circulated on social media and other platforms. Lawmakers said releasing the certified documents would allow Nigerians, businesses and stakeholders to access the official, legally binding texts of the laws.
The tax reforms form part of the federal government’s broader fiscal agenda to increase revenue, streamline tax administration and reduce leakages in the system. Officials of the House said the decision reflects the National Assembly’s commitment to openness, especially on policies with far-reaching economic implications.
The publication comes amid criticism from opposition figures and civil society organisations, who argue that recent tax measures could place additional pressure on citizens already facing rising living costs. The federal government has defended the reforms, maintaining that they are necessary to stabilise the economy and reduce dependence on borrowing.
