President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), bringing a new face and a fresh chapter to one of Nigeria’s most important education institutions.
The appointment was announced on 21 May 2026, with Professor Aina set to officially take over from Professor Ishaq Oloyede when his tenure ends on 31 July 2026.
At 39 years old, Professor Aina is expected to become the youngest person ever appointed to lead JAMB, a detail that has already sparked conversations within academic and education circles.
For millions of Nigerian students, JAMB is more than just an examination body. Every year, it oversees the UTME examinations that determine admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country. Because of that, any leadership change within the board often attracts nationwide attention.
Unlike many traditional public administrators, Professor Aina comes from a strong technology background. He is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University and is known for his work in digital systems and examination technology.
According to information released by the presidency, he studied in the United Kingdom, specialising in areas including network security, computer systems engineering and digital processing. Over the years, he has also worked with examination bodies such as NECO and NABTEB on technology and examination-related projects and once served with JAMB during his national youth service
His appointment is coming at a time when technology is becoming even more central to education in Nigeria.
From computer-based examinations to digital admission systems, many observers believe the next phase of JAMB will rely heavily on innovation and improved technology infrastructure.
Under the outgoing registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB underwent several reforms that changed public perception of the institution. The board introduced stricter examination monitoring, expanded computer-based testing and improved admission transparency, moves that earned both praise and scrutiny over the years.
Now, attention is gradually shifting to what the incoming registrar will bring to the table.
Many students and parents are hopeful that the new leadership could continue improving the examination process while making registration, admissions and result management more efficient and less stressful for candidates.
For some education analysts, the appointment also sends another message that younger professionals with strong technical expertise are increasingly being trusted with leadership positions in major national institutions.
As Professor Aina prepares to assume office in July, expectations are already building around what could become a new era for JAMB and the millions of students who depend on it every year.
