This week on Africans on the Table with King John, we tell the story of Adebayo — a young carpenter hustling in the city of Lagos, surviving and striving through the work of his hands.
“My name is Adebayo Babalola. I am a professional carpenter. People say I know my job very well. Even though carpentry wasn’t my first dream, I have come to love it. I have done this work for a very long time, thanking God and hoping that one day He will help me fulfil my destiny and take me to the next level.
I am always happy when I am working. I work with patience and honesty, and my heart is at peace.”
Adebayo’s story is one of resilience, passion, and dignity in labour. In the midst of Lagos’ noise and pressure, he continues to shape wood — and a future — driven by love for his craft and faith in God.

This is not just carpentry.
This is survival.
It is a reminder that Africans are resolved, passionate, and capable in their daily work. Across the continent, talent and determination are everywhere — what is missing is access.
Africans don’t ask for sympathy.
We ask for a chance at the table — to be seen, to be trusted, and to be given opportunities to contribute, build, and lead meaningful change.
This is purpose.
This is Africa — unfiltered.
