Fire Outbreak at Murtala Muhammed International Airport; Authorities Launch Investigation Into Cause

A fire outbreak has rocked the old Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, causing significant damage to critical aviation infrastructure and temporarily disrupting flight operations.

The incident, which reportedly began in the early hours of Monday, February 23, is said to have started in a server room within the international terminal before spreading to other sections of the building. Emergency response teams, including airport fire services and the Lagos State Fire Service, swiftly moved in to contain the blaze and prevent it from escalating further.

Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded, though some individuals sustained minor injuries and received immediate medical attention.

The fire destroyed vital communication and weather-monitoring equipment belonging to key aviation agencies, leading to temporary flight delays and the diversion of some inbound aircraft. Backup systems were later deployed to stabilize operations and reopen affected airspace.

Officials have assured the public that flight activities have largely resumed, with efforts underway to assess the full extent of the damage. The affected terminal, which had reportedly been scheduled for renovation and redevelopment, may now face accelerated reconstruction plans following the incident.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.
