Federal University Lokoja Unveils Nike University Gallery as Kogi Governor Commissions Heritage Projects

The Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Joel Salifu Oyibo, visited the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) on Monday, 9 February 2026, to commission a series of major academic and cultural projects aimed at strengthening heritage education and research within the institution.

The event featured the commissioning of Professor Olayemi Akinwumi’s Valedictory Projects, alongside the official opening of the Nike University Gallery, a creative space designed to promote African arts and cultural preservation among students and researchers.

Other key highlights included the establishment of the Nike Institute of African Heritage and Museum Studies, the groundbreaking ceremony for the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the foundation laying of an Ethnographic Workshop, all of which are expected to enhance cultural scholarship and hands-on academic learning at the university.

University officials described the initiatives as part of a broader vision to position Federal University Lokoja as a centre for African heritage studies, interdisciplinary research and cultural innovation. They noted that the projects would provide students with opportunities to engage directly with Nigeria’s diverse traditions, artistic expressions and historical research.

During the ceremony, dignitaries, academic staff, students and invited guests participated in project tours and discussions highlighting the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and promoting African identity through education.

The commissioning marks a significant milestone in the university’s development efforts and reflects growing collaboration between educational institutions, government leadership and cultural organisations in advancing heritage preservation and academic excellence in Nigeria.

Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention: Protecting Children During Malaria Season

Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) is a preventive strategy used to protect children from malaria during periods of high transmission, especially in regions where malaria is seasonal. It involves giving eligible children antimalarial medicines at monthly intervals throughout the malaria season to reduce the risk of infection. SMC is particularly important for children under five years of age, who are most vulnerable to severe malaria. The intervention has been proven to reduce malaria cases, hospital admissions, and deaths among children. Its success depends on the active participation of parents, caregivers, healthcare workers, and communities. By providing protection during peak malaria periods, SMC plays a vital role in improving child health and reducing the burden of malaria in affected regions.
