President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sworn in Dr. Muttaqha Darma as Nigeria’s new Minister of
Housing, setting out expectations for the role in driving national development.
At the swearing-in ceremony, the president highlighted the importance of the housing sector,
describing it as central to economic growth, infrastructure expansion and improving living
standards.
He urged the new minister to focus on practical results, particularly in addressing housing
shortages and expanding access to affordable homes across the country.
But beyond the ceremony, the appointment raises a key question: can the housing sector deliver
the kind of visible impact many Nigerians are waiting for?
The government has in recent months emphasised housing as part of its broader development
strategy, linking it to job creation and urban development. However, challenges such as funding,
project execution and rising construction costs remain significant.
Analysts say the minister’s performance will likely be judged not just by policy announcements,
but by how quickly projects translate into real improvements on the ground.
As expectations build, attention is now on how the new leadership will navigate these
challenges and whether the sector can meet growing public demand for affordable and
accessible housing.
