One Continent, Fifty-Four Countries, One Microphone: How the One54 podcast is changing who tells Africa’s story to the world

For most of the last century, the world learned about Africa from people who did not live there. The stories arrived in a handful of familiar shapes: famine, war, rescue, and the occasional safari. Africans appeared in them as subjects, rarely as narrators. Even today, a child in Houston or Hamburg is more likely to meet the continent through a charity advert than through a joke told by someone who grew up eating jollof at a family party. When I heard him sit down with the hosts of One54, two Nigerian-Americans, I realised I was watching something rare: a serious scholar of Black America speaking directly, and honestly, to the African diaspora’s children. This article is my attempt to understand more, and to share what.....

TUNDE ONAKOYA MAKES A GOOD MOVE WITH NEW CHESS CLUB

Every move tells a story. On a chessboard, one wrong step can change the game. In life, however, the right move can open a door for someone else. Perhaps that is the thinking behind Good Move, a new social chess club launched in Lagos by Nigerian chess master and Guinness World Record holder Tunde Onakoya. The club held its first gathering on September 23 at PANU Lagos, bringing together chess lovers, beginners and curious minds. The plan is simple: meet every Tuesday, play chess, learn and connect. But for Onakoya, chess has always been bigger than the board.
